    EggXpert Update

A quick look around the forums yields a lot of information. Here's a rundown of some standouts from the past two weeks:

The YouTube Hall of Fame's off to a good start. Check out the vids that fellow forum members enjoy most from YouTube and post a few of your own.

Julien's started a "Rate my Rig" thread. Check out how this 14 year-old's first project turned out...or stop by and give your input to any of the other rigs in the System Builds subforum under Geek Speak > Hardware. Maybe we should start up a thread with an "Am I Hot or Not?"-style rating system so everyone can show off their builds?

GeekSpeak: The usual threads on hardware/software options, compatability questions and builds. Some interesting posts:
    * Starting a new business, seeing advice & help
    * Urgent: Need help accessing hard drive!
    * The Upcoming Intel Price Drop: Battle of the processors! Get E6850 or Q6600? and Intel Pricing July 22nd Info Chart

OPs: please remember to mark your threads "Resolved" if the EggXperts were able to come up with a solution to your problem.

Finally, be sure to read GenSeneca's "EggFleet Eggsplorers, episode 1," a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi adventure, featuring some familiar "faces" from the EggXpert forums.  In this installment, we meet Captain Juan Carlos and his crew, as they head out to answer an intergalactic distress call, dodging renegade G.P.S. attacks and egg puns along the way.

    Gamers' Gamut
    Socially Conscious Gaming

Gaming, be it PC or console, is one of the few entertainment mediums in today's world that remains, by and large, true to its name: simply fun and games. But with the expanded consumer base and respect the industry has gained in recent years, developers are beginning to see the potential of games as powerful tools to affect social change.

Several activists, companies, and even NGOs are tapping into gaming's broad userbase to encourage awareness in a generally less-involved demographic. The various socially conscious games already in existence cover a range of problems, from the harshness of life in third-world countries to the vanishing ecosystems falling victim to global warming.

So far, this genre has failed to attract much attention from fans and game media alike due to its tendency to take on a Sims-like environment (but without the business and relationship-building functions that make the Sims series fun) and use fairly unimaginative storylines. A few mainstream games Happily, developers and activists alike are beginning to aim to make games that will deliver a message and entertain along the way.

We've hunted down a handful of titles (and a few challenges to create some of your own) that we think are among the best of breed for you to try out.

    The EggXpert Scavenger Hunt #1

So you think you know EggXpert.com, eh? Know it well enough to unearth its buried treasure? To the intrepid souls who answered, "Yes, I am an EggXpert and I know my homeland, dangit!" step right up and take the EggXpert Scavenger Hunt Challenge.

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to be the first to find the following seven items somewhere on EggXpert.com. Please note that for this hunt, you may only use pages, posts and blog entries that were posted on or before 11:59pm on July 5, 2007.

Our forum is vast and there may be multiple acceptable pages/posts/entries for each of these seven items. The first treasure hunter to submit seven items that our judges determine match the seven clues will be declared our winner!

Entering is simple: email links of the pages where the seven items can be found and write a short but precise description of where on the page the item is located (i.e. "upper left corner, under the title bar" or "in the post by RedCrest dated 6/7/2007") to newsletter@eggxpert.com along with your forum name. Our winner will receive a Scavenger Badge to include in your forum signature bar and our snazzy new EggXpert t-shirt! (not to mention mad bragging rights… at least, until the next Scavenger Hunt… Mwa ha ha ha!)

All right, ready, Eggsplorers? Then have at these!

    The Egg and the Encyclopedia
Technology moves at blinding speeds, and the cutting edge throws so many new electronics products at us that we're onto version 5.0 before we've even had a chance to get 3.1 to stop smelling factory-fresh. As much as everyone zooms straight to the specs pages of the hottest new gizmo hitting the market, what about all the old stuff? What happens when an item you haven't been following for thirty incarnations suddenly gets rave reviews and you want to see just what they've improved since the last version? Well, that's where a little something called Eggipedia comes in.

Newegg.com has an extensive catalogue of product pages packed full of all the specs, descriptions, multi-angle photos, and customer reviews that have made it such a popular e-stop for electronics. But when products sell out and their product pages become defunct, what is there to do with all the good information that gets left over? In this age of Wikipedia, Wookiepedia, Softwarepedia, and so on, the answer seemed obvious: Eggipedia.

"We have so much good material written up for our product pages that it seemed a waste to take them all down after a product went out of stock," said Chad Chen, Newegg.com Vice President of the COO Office. "This way, the efforts and input of so many people have a place to be seen and are put to good use."

The database, to be launched on EggXpert.com in mid-August, will initially serve as an archive for the thousands of comprehensive product information pages--both current and outdated--on Newegg.com. As with its namesake, Eggipedia will allow users to edit and update entries with their own information and reviews. In the future, the site is expected to expand to become a free content encyclopedia for all things technological in which users may also create their own entries.
