My Soccer Mom is a Computer Repair Tech?!
    By Ladytekki
avatar - Ladytekki Becoming a part-time or full time computer repair technician might be the next big thing for Soccer Moms in Smalltown, USA!

Today, I’m writing about an idea that crosses my mind very often: stay-at-home moms should become computer repair technicians. Odd as it sounds, I’ve talked about it with some of my technician friends and they agree with me— there is a definite need in small towns across America for more computer repair techs who can do basics like running a clean installation of Windows, installing programs, adding upgrades, and so on.
So, I decided to write a little something to spread the idea and also share some of my experiences as a female tech. It’s not the ultimate guide, of course, and if you feel inspired enough to try, you will definitely need to do some research on your own as well. But I hope my experiences will encourage women who are computer savvy enough (wouldn’t everyone on this forum count, more or less?) but may not have thought to try their hand at entering the pro industry.

This week on the grill: "The iPhone Will Revolutionize the Cellphone Industry"

    Sunny Side Up by focs424
A new craze has swept the nation, from the creators at Apple that brought us the iPod comes the incredibly versatile iPhone. It’s no wonder fan boys are singing with glee and phone enthusiasts are rattled: the iPhone is going to set a new precedent for cellular phones. So why all the ruckus? Well, if you’ve been around the cellular phone technology scene, you know the iPhone is not the most advanced phone on the current market and it’s far from surpassing Japanese cell phone technology, but Apple has once again integrated all the current technology into a seamlessly simple-to-use and extravagantly designed device, which is a trademark with the Apple folks.

Whether you’re a casual techie or an enthusiast, you can appreciate the iPhone. It’s hard to pass it by without it evoking your interest. The iPhone has all the basic functions of a cell phone and a lot of useful gadgets too. Although it is optimized for multimedia use, the iPhone also has Google Maps, a 2.0 megapixel camera, iPod built in, YouTube mobile and several other exciting features. It will revolutionize the multimedia aspect of cell phones; other phones to be released in the future will no doubt take cues from the iPhone. Once again, it is safe to say that Apple has developed a solid product, and in turn set a new standard which will revolutionize the cell phone industry.

    iPhone is Eggxcruciating
Despite the hype, the iPhone is disappointing for those who own it. I know debut products always have flaws, but for the price, you'd think Apple would introduce something better thought out.

While it comes equipped with nice features, it lacks the basic features found on many other cell phones. How's it revolutionary if, despite the cool new features, it's lacking the basics that everyone else has?

    Major Issues
    - No insurance plan. You’ll have to protect your phone with your life.
    - It’ll cost you over $1000 a year in additional fees, aside from your monthly service fee.
    - Audio quality is good on your end but not too clear at your friends’ end.
    - Battery life way too low. You’ll have to pay $80 to get it replaced and wait about 2-3 weeks for your phone (no phone during this time since it doesn’t come with a SIM card).
    - No 3G. It also doesn't support Java or Flash and you can’t watch video websites, except with a YouTube plugin.
    - Can’t send pictures to other phones, only via email.
    - No video recording. What’s the use of watching videos if you can’t record video memories?
    - Must use an iTunes Library but with limited memory, it’s much harder to manage.

    Annoying Flaws
    - iPod music phone with no MP3 Ringtones! What were they thinking?
-Had to purchase separate headphone plugin adapter to use “universal” headphones
    - If you don't use a headset, be careful: your cheek on the touchscreen might end your call.
    - Sorry, ladies. If makeup rubs off on the phone, it will make the screen unreadable.
    - It's very hard to text with both hands since the keyboard only displays in vertical view. You have to use your pinky so you don’t type more than one letter at once. Also, you have to enter a different keyboard for punctuation marks. If texting is your thing, you will hate it.

I have returned my iPhone and am doing more with my smartphone with less of a hassle. I might reconsider this phone if most of these issues are dealt with.

    Super Scavenger!
Congrats to CthulthuDawn, who mastered the first EggXpert Scavenger Hunt within a few short minutes of Issue #2's release. Does that mean it was too easy for you EggXperts? We'll have to see what we can do about that! Keep an eye out for SH #2 in the next Newsletter. Let's see who's up to the challenge...and if anyone can steal the title (and the shiny insignia) away from our current champ.
An E3 for You and Me
The Mecca of console gaming we call the Electronic Entertainment Expo (a.k.a. E3) happened this past weekend (July 11-13) in Santa Monica, but if you blinked, you missed it (well, except for the news of who is and isn’t cutting prices). Though E3 had always been “industry only” (unlike its two major counterparts, Tokyo Game Show and Leipzig Games Convention), a determined fan could usually find her way in with a self-made video game newsletter and a Press badge. This year, however, E3 became an invitation-only event open exclusively to the three console-makers and 30 or so of the biggest game publishing companies like Konami, Square-Enix, and Electronic Arts. Members of the media were restricted to scheduled press conferences, and the main events of the gathering were meetings between execs behind closed conference room doors.

But (and there’s a big but here) the Entertainment Software Association who runs E3 has finally embraced the teeming ranks of gamers and created something even better for us: “E for All,” a real video game convention officially open to the public with all the booths, the demos, the booth girls, and free gifts North American fans have been missing out on for years!

Taking place at the LA Convention Center (the former home of E3) from October 18-21, E For All is looking to measure up to its Japanese and German counterparts with a full-on Exhibition Floor featuring booths from all your favorite game developers, a free concert from the popular “Video Games Live” symphony orchestra, the “In the Pixel” video game art show, and the World Series of Video Games’ final U.S. event for 2007 featuring tournaments for World of Warcraft, Guitar Hero II, EA Sports’ Fight Night Round 3, and Call of Duty 2. We have no doubt our cosplaying friends from the anime and comic conventions will be adding their own photo-worthy contributions to the event and that it will grow to include even more in the future.

Pre-registration for this historic convention is a hefty $90, but has the advantage of being about $20 cheaper than at-the-door registration and grants you the right to enter the Exhibition Floor four hours before doors open to regular attendees on Day 1 and an hour before opening each day thereafter. Be sure to check out the official E for All site for more information and registration at www.eforallexpo.com.
