The basics of upgrading to Windows 10
When Windows 10 releases on July 29, it will do so as a free upgrade for many users. If you currently have Windows 7 or 8.1 running on your home PC and you want to know what you need to do to secure your free upgrade to the new OS, there are a few simple steps you need to take.
Step 1: Know What You're Getting
Windows 10 will come in two main versions for PC: Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 Professional. Your free upgrade will provide you with one or the other, depending on which version of 7 or 8.1 you're running. Here's the official breakdown from Microsoft:
Step 2: Reserve Your Free Upgrade
Most likely on your Windows 7 or 8.1 PC you'll already have a small icon waiting on the right end of your taskbar, as explained in Microsoft's official upgrade guide.
By clicking that icon you'll open the Get Windows 10 App, which will allow you to reserve your free upgrade with a single click. Then just enter your e-mail to get confirmation, and you'll be on the way to Windows 10.
Step 3: Getting Ready
Windows 10 won't be out until July 29, so you'll have some time to wait before you actually start the download and upgrade process. That's an excellent time to make sure your current OS is up to date to make the transition as easy as possible. Download and install all those pending updates – you'll be happy you did later.
You'll also want to start backing up your important files (always a good idea when doing any work on your computer), and checking your system health in general to make sure you'll be able to get the most out of Windows 10.
Once you've gotten these simple steps taken care of, you're ready for your free upgrade. Once July 29 arrives you'll be able to download the new OS and complete the upgrade process, and then you'll have the full power of Windows 10 at your fingertips.
