Make the space before you need it.

How Much Storage Do You Need for GTA 6? PS5 & Xbox SSD Upgrade Guide

Read the guide

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, and it is expected to be one of the largest console installs ever. Rockstar hasn't confirmed an exact file size. Early community estimates range from roughly 150GB to 300GB before any patches. If your console is already close to full, now is the time to plan.

How much free space does your console really have?

ConsoleAdvertisedUsable (approx.)
PS5 (original)825GB~667GB
Xbox Series X1TB~802GB
Xbox Series S512GB~364GB

After the system software and a couple of other big games, many players have less free space than a single GTA VI install needs.

Upgrading a PS5

The PS5 has an M.2 expansion slot that runs PS5 games at full speed. Sony supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs in sizes from 2230 to 22110 and recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster read speeds. A heatsink or heat-transfer sheet is required. Drives like the SAMSUNG 990 PRO with Heatsink and the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850X drop straight in. Installation takes about 10 minutes with a small screwdriver.

Upgrading an Xbox Series X|S

Xbox Series X|S games run only from internal storage or an official expansion card. The SanDisk Optimus GX C50 plugs into the back of the console and performs like the internal SSD, with Quick Resume intact. No tools needed.

What about external USB drives?

External hard drives like the WD_BLACK P10 and Seagate Game Drive are great for archiving your library, but PS5 and Xbox Series games can't be played from them. Move older titles off your internal SSD to make room, then move them back in minutes instead of re-downloading.

Our recommendation

  • Light library: 1TB SSD or expansion card
  • Most players: 2TB, enough for GTA VI plus your rotation
  • Collectors: 4TB internal plus a 5–6TB external for the archive

Stop 03 · Networking

A huge download deserves a faster lane.

A 150GB download can take over 3 hours at 100 Mbps, but just 20 minutes at 1 Gbps under ideal conditions. Upgrade to a Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E router, mesh system, or wired Ethernet connection for faster downloads and a smoother launch-day experience.

  • 150GB @ 100 Mbps ≈ 3.3 hrs
  • 150GB @ 500 Mbps ≈ 40 min
  • 150GB @ 1 Gbps ≈ 20 min
  • Most reliable: wired Ethernet

Best Router for GTA 6: Faster Preloads and a Steadier Connection

Read the guide

Every copy of GTA VI installs from a download. Digital preloading opens November 12, the same day boxed copies go on sale with a download code instead of a disc. That means your home network now decides how fast you get into Vice City.

How long will the GTA 6 download take?

Connection speed150GB download (ideal)
100 Mbps~3 hr 20 min
300 Mbps~1 hr 7 min
500 Mbps~40 min
1 Gbps~20 min

Real-world Wi-Fi often delivers far less than your plan's speed, especially through walls or on an older ISP router.

Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6E vs Wi-Fi 6

Wi-Fi 7 routers add wider channels and multi-link operation for more throughput and steadier latency. They're backward compatible, so every console benefits from a stronger, cleaner signal even if the console itself uses an older Wi-Fi standard. Wi-Fi 6E adds the less crowded 6GHz band, and Wi-Fi 6 is a strong budget upgrade over ISP hardware.

A note on consoles: PS5 uses Wi-Fi 6 and Xbox Series X|S uses Wi-Fi 5, so neither can connect on the 6GHz band. Only PS5 Pro supports Wi-Fi 7. A newer router still helps every console with better range, a stronger 5GHz signal and more capacity for the rest of the house.

Mesh for multi-room setups

If your console is in a bedroom or basement, a mesh system puts a node close by. Many nodes also have Ethernet ports, so you can plug the console straight in.

The most reliable connection: plug it in

A wired Ethernet connection gives the fastest, most consistent download. A Cat 6A cable, a small gigabit switch or a powerline kit is the cheapest performance upgrade you can make.

Router features gamers should look for

  • Game traffic prioritization (QoS)
  • 2.5G or faster WAN/LAN ports for multi-gig internet plans
  • Mesh support so you can expand later

The Ultimate GTA 6 Gaming Setup: Chairs, Controllers and Headsets for Marathon Sessions

Read the guide

Rockstar's open worlds are built for long stays. Between the story and the side activities, launch week will mean a lot of hours on the couch or at the desk. These upgrades keep you comfortable and in control.

1. A gaming chair that supports you

Look for adjustable lumbar support, a seat that fits your height, and armrests that adjust in several directions. Breathable fabric or mesh stays cooler than bonded leather during long sessions.

2. A pro controller

Back paddles let you aim, drive and switch weapons without taking your thumbs off the sticks. Adjustable trigger stops make shooting more responsive. Pro controllers are available for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

3. A headset you'll forget you're wearing

Spatial audio helps you hear exactly where sirens, footsteps and gunfire are coming from. Choose a wireless headset with a low-latency 2.4GHz dongle, and make sure it supports your console.

4. Charging and power

A charging dock keeps a second controller ready. Pair it with a surge protector so your console and TV are protected during long sessions.

5. Set the mood

LED strips behind your TV or monitor reduce eye strain in a dark room. Pink-and-teal lighting gets your setup into the Vice City spirit.

  • Refresh rate: 120Hz+ for smoother gameplay

Best TV and Monitor for GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Read the guide

GTA VI's neon nights, ocean sunsets and crowded streets are a real test for any display. Here's what to look for so your screen isn't the weak link in your setup.

Start with 4K and HDR

GTA VI is expected to run at 30fps on consoles at launch, so the upgrade you'll notice most is picture quality. Look for a 4K panel with high peak brightness and good local dimming for vivid HDR highlights.

HDMI 2.1 for the future

PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X can output 4K at up to 120Hz over HDMI 2.1. GTA VI isn't confirmed to use it at launch, but HDMI 2.1, 120Hz and VRR keep your TV ready for later updates and the rest of your library.

The features that matter

  • HDR brightness: strong peak brightness and good local dimming for vivid highlights
  • ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode): switches the TV into game mode automatically
  • VRR (Variable Refresh Rate): smooths frame-rate dips and screen tearing in games that support it

OLED vs Mini-LED

OLED gives you perfect blacks and very fast response, which suits night drives through Vice City. Mini-LED gets brighter and is a better fit for sunny living rooms. Both are excellent for console gaming.

TV or monitor?

For couch play, a 55–65 inch 4K TV is the sweet spot. At a desk, a 27–32 inch 4K monitor with HDMI 2.1 handles console 4K and HDR and doubles as a PC display.

Don't forget sound

Built-in TV speakers rarely do justice to a Rockstar soundtrack. A Dolby Atmos soundbar connected over eARC is a simple upgrade.
